Description

----- Cigarettes -----

Made for a project of my photography course and since I barely note down the nerdy technical details I can't give you any informations about how exactly I made this one.

Fun Fact: I made this photo on my messy desk and since I didn't had any proper lamp in my room I used an old lava lamp for the lights

I'd really appreciate some critique and comments, since I barely take photos of something and don't consider myself as the natural born photographer xD

First and foremost, the lighting and shadows on the piece are well executed. The contrast is concise, and there is an obvious balance of light and dark tones throughout the image. I do however feel that there is slightly too much contrast in the work, as the part of the cigarette towards The focus of the piece is dark for being at the "front" of your viewpoint, and the piles of cigarette material are a bit dark as well. The saturation of colors and level of intensity of colors are very good, however - the colors and saturation flow naturally. As you mentioned in your comments, the lighting you had wasn't as good as you would have liked it to be, and while I don't know what a better light would do, I do think it turned out well.

Now, on to the depth of the piece - I think it is done fairly well - there is an obvious sense of depth and perspective coming from the placement of everything, however I think the depth blur is a little too far forward: in my opinion, the place the depth blur should start would be slightly behind the left angle made by the intersecting cigarettes, and it seems to be in front of that mark a bit. That, combined with a lack of lighting on the front of the cigarette sticking towards the camera makes the actual focus to be the the tip of the cigarette closest to the one on top.

The piece is beautifully done - I myself can't match that with the camera I have. It is very good in my opinion: I hope these ideas help! Personally, I don't smoke and am asthmatic - but I tried not to let that stand in the way for sharing my mind.
